Build vs. buy: should you code your own ring builder?
If you're a developer, or an AI agent, asked to "build a ring builder", the first version looks small: a few steps, some dropdowns, a submit button. This page lists what a jeweler actually needs from it, and when building it yourself is the better choice.
#What a production ring builder needs
| Part | Build it yourself | ShowroomPro |
|---|---|---|
| Guided quiz with jewelry-specific options and explanations | Design, copy and UI for every step, in every language you support | Included; the jeweler picks which options to show |
| A picture of the ring the shopper chose | AI image pipeline (prompting, model choice, retries, moderation, storage) or a 3D model per combination | Photorealistic AI renders, with refinements |
| Cost control | Per-shopper and per-month limits on image generation | Built in |
| Lead capture | Form, validation, consent, spam protection, storage | Included |
| Jeweler workflow | Admin view, email alerts, follow-ups, quoting | Dashboard, alerts, email automations |
| Embedding | Separate code for each website platform | One snippet for every platform |
| Integrations | Your own | Webhooks, conversion tracking |
| Time to first working version | Weeks | Minutes |
#When building it yourself makes sense
- You sell from inventory. If shoppers must pick real, in-stock diamonds and settings with live prices and checkout, you need an inventory-connected builder (or a custom build on top of your catalog). ShowroomPro doesn't sell through a cart.
- You need CAD-accurate 3D of your own SKUs. If every combination must be shown as an exact, rotatable 3D model of a specific catalog item, use a 3D configurator. ShowroomPro shows AI images of the shopper's design (and an interactive 3D model generated from them), which is what custom jewelers quote from.
- The configurator is your product. If the ring builder is the core of your business and must live in your codebase, build it.
#When embedding ShowroomPro makes sense
- The jeweler makes custom or made-to-order rings and wants qualified inquiries.
- The site runs on Shopify, WordPress, Wix, Squarespace, Webflow or a framework, and nobody wants to maintain a custom app.
- You need it working today, and the jeweler should be able to change options and branding without a developer.
Try it: the Quickstart creates a working ring builder in one request.
#Questions
#How long does it take to build a ring builder?
A basic form takes a day or two. A version with realistic images, lead management and embeds for several platforms usually takes weeks, plus ongoing costs for image generation and maintenance. Embedding ShowroomPro takes a few minutes.
#Can I start with ShowroomPro and build later?
Yes. Leads and designs can be exported through webhooks, and removing the snippet removes the widget.
#Is an AI image accurate enough to make the ring?
It's accurate enough to agree on a design and a quote, which is how custom jewelers work today with sketches and references. The jeweler then produces CAD and the final piece as usual.
